ANSWER How ports help trade: Harbours and ports are the chief gateways of international trade, through which cargoes and travellers pass from one part of the world to another. They provide facilities for docking, loading, unloading and storage of cargo. To do this, port authorities maintain navigable channels, arrange tugs and barges, and provide labour and managerial services. The importance of a port is judged by the size of cargo and the number of ships handled, and the quantity of cargo handled is an indicator of the level of development of its hinterland. Classification of ports on the basis of location: (i) Inland Ports — located away from the sea coast and linked to the sea through a river or canal; accessible to flat-bottom ships or barges. Examples: Manchester (canal), Memphis (Mississippi), Mannheim and Duisburg (Rhine), and Kolkata (river Hoogli). (ii) Out Ports — deep-water ports built away from the actual ports to serve the parent ports by receiving large ships that cannot approach them. A classic example is Athens and its out port Piraeus in Greece.
